Tim Newsom

Writer covering healthcare philanthropy, community giving, and the people behind hospital fundraising

Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Northwestern University • Lead Editor at Protect The Heroes • 12 years in Healthcare Philanthropy

Tim grew up around a small community hospital in the Midwest, where his mother worked as a nurse for twenty-three years. That early exposure to the people who keep hospitals running shaped the way he writes about healthcare today. He treats fundraising stories as labor stories first, and finance stories second.

What I Write About

My Approach

"A donation only matters once it lands somewhere real. My job is to find out where it landed and ask the person who caught it."

Tim approaches each piece by talking to the people on the receiving end of a donation, not just the people writing the checks. He believes good reporting on philanthropy means following the dollar all the way to the person whose shift it changed.

Currently Working On

Tim is currently working on a long-running series tracking what happened to pandemic-era hospital donor networks five years after the initial wave of giving.
